Santa Santita by Shaun "Nutz Guy" Ramento

Santa Santita

The difficult of life in the Philippines varies from certain location but most of those locations are the difficult ones. If you are happy living in the Philipines, I consider you fortunate because searching for happiness in the Philippines is a journey that considers to be a very complicated task. When there’s no hope in finding this one face to God for answers and prayers. Everyday in the Philippines you will always see an abundance of people near churches. These people would be selling rosaries, begging for money, or just praying. In this film, it shows a young girl selling rosaries near a church and at the same time fooling around like admiring the cellphones on the display. Her mother is in the church offering her service to people who wants her to pray for them while her father was mention in the film who have left them a long time ago and now both the mother and daughter has to seek the path of happiness which leads to unexpected turns.
Whenever someone mentions the churches in the Philippines I still remember the days when I go to church in the Philippines and I will always see the amount of people who would kneel and pray to God in the church. Outside of the church there are a lot of homeless people begging for food or money, people with a missing leg or arm, and people selling stufffs. When I find out that the give service to pray for people I was kind of shock because I don’t think this was religiously ethical. It’s like a non-profit organization asking for a fee for the service they do. I find this very disgraceful and not the way of catholism. What is even more demeaning is when the priests/nuns are asking/taking money from that service when they KNOW the money was coming from a degrading service and to think that they would just eat their pride and let it happen.
The main character, Malin, was a tiresome teenager that shows a lack of spirit as a catholic girl. Her mother, Chayong, who was very religious would ask/force Malin to help her in order to find money and food, and every night they would pray Hail Mary. Then one day she met this one guy, Mike, outside of the church while selling rosaries and that’s when everything starts going downhill for Malin. Malin lied to her mother by telling her she was sick and had to stay home in order to go out with Mike on that day. Her mother was so worried and furious with her that night when Malin came home really late and finding out Malin was not sick at all. The next day Malin left her mother and did not come back for quite a while instead she went to visit Mike and stayed at Mike’s place. I can see this happening a lot in the Philippines where the parents is overprotective to their child especially if it’s a single parent being overprotective to the his/her daughter. I can understand why fi
lipino parents are very protective especially if it’s an only child where losing an only child can be very desvastating. But then again when a parent goes overboard by not respecting the privacy of his/her own child, usually the child will not take it any longer and rebels. Malin who stayed at Mike did not know the consequence when she left her mother went back to her home only to find out that her mother died from a heart attack and was not able to shed a tear during her mother’s funeral. Now she finally realize that she has to take care of herself and was very scared about it. She ended up doing what her mother did to get money which was prayer service at the church. Having a prayer service was bad enough but then Malin exploited even farther when her praying was much more stronger according to the people who have asked for her prayer. It was getting out of hand that the nuns tells her to not do it at the church for it looks like a circus now.
While during those times Mike has been also giving certain services for his clients. Although, one of his clients didn’t pay for the “service” but instead only the taxi fare. His client was saying that she doesn’t pay for sex and that usually she can find men who would have sex with her free of charge. At first I thought Mike was just doing this for money and sex but then when I see him very dissapointed for not getting paid, I thought “Wow, he expects to get paid after getting laid?” I think he just assumed he will get paid. This whole time though that he was trying to get the money to pay for the medicine for his sick son.
