Reflection: Imelda (JH Acidera)

Overlooking the many shoes that Imelda Marcos owned, she was a person who was passionate of her country, the Philippines. She for the time being, was like a mother of the country, that cared and catered to her children – the residents or people of the Philippines. She represented the country whenever she traveled around the world. She did what she could to nurture the country. She was one powerful woman. She was a woman who had what she called a different perspective in life, although many may beg to differ.

Imelda lives a life that many wish they could. She has all the conveniences that many don’t have. She is a woman that many idolize on. To many, they think the opposite and dislike her. Although materialistic in her ways, she has accomplished a lot for the country. At the earliest times, her and the late President Ferdinand Marcos paved a way of rejuvenating and stimulating the growth of the country. Through the many terms, many considered it to be one of the best times in Philippines history. It was during the later part of President’s terms when I think things fell through the crack and that people were being taken advantage of. The corruptions came and the greater community started to turn against them.

Imelda explains their position throughout their leadership for the country. At times she was very funny as she explained things, but in actuality she was very serious. For one example she had these drawings that she illustrated to represent ways of achieving the very best for the people and the country. Various symbols represented things and then later, these symbols combined with others represented even bigger things. As awkward as her illustrations sound, there seems to be some truth to it if you look deeper into the picture. In a way she made sense, but whoever would listen to her would probably just listen out of respect but would not take it seriously. But as a person, it showed her concern and love for the country as she was always finding ways to make things better.

For one thing, Imelda was very much in tune to her looks. Whether at home, shopping, grocery, or being outside of the country, she always portrayed herself to look beautiful as she feels as if she is a representation for the country, someone whom those of the outside world could identify to the Philippines. Unfortunately, this is far from the reality as many are not able to live the way she did. Although it made it her feel that way, to many it just seemed as if she was spoiled and taking advantage of things, especially since her husband was the President.

In her personal life, you can see that she cared for her family very much. She raised her children very well and wanting the best for them as any mother or parent would want. She was always there for her husband, supporting him in every way that she could, reaching out into the community, whether if it was through campaign or various community services.

She was one who liked to sing and throw extravagant parties. Through such ways, she is able to put on a charm, wooing people in ways that others are not able to. There is this spark that she had that was contagious, making the start of her life a successful one with Ferdinand. It was amazing how people would request for her to sing songs. It was also amazing how much money she would spend for parties. Too many, these kind of things were unnecessary. But again, she continues to reason herself out that she simply just thinks differently than the rest.

Movie revealed a lot of money scandal’s and the misuse of money that seemed to be stashed away for their personal use, such as the purchases of various buildings in New York, to the purchases of personal things such as paintings, jewelries, and so forth. Of course, it is natural for the community to think negatively about how they are using the money, especially if it belonged to the country. It should have been spent on the Philippines, so that they could have continued their positive path of developing it. Unfortunately, things didn’t go quite that way.

I must say though, Imelda Marcos did do a lot for her people. Although she may seem selfish or spoiled, she really contributed a lot. Being that she was a woman, that is another plus as many woman usually didn’t have the kind of power or respect that she did. What was done is now the past and therefore it is just right to continue to look forward. In hopes for Philippines to grow, there is no doubt that Imelda will try to help in whatever ways that she can.
